Have Hollywood horror movies gone too far?

Hollywood horror is one of my favorite movie genres. I love being scared and nothing is better than a really good scary movie. The first scary movie I ever saw was Scream. This was when scary movies focused on the villains popping out of places and gory gruesome violence (although Scream looked like a school play compared to Saw) for its time it was a scary movie. As the years went by, the more and more scary movies I would see. It wasn't just the newest movies, I've seen scary movies from Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" to Halloween 1-100 to Gremlins. Anything that could possibly make me jump or scream, I was watching it. If you are a movie buff like me you will notice a trend in scary movies throughout the eras. 1930's brought us monster movies such as Dracula, Frankenstein and the Mummy. The 50's focused on sci-fi/horror and giant bugs with movies like, Them!, The Beginning of the End, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Moving into the 60's and 70's you start to see more gore with movies like Psycho, Night of the Living Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. And the 80's started the slasher film craze with Friday the Thirteenth and A Nightmare on Elm Street. The 90's brought us alot of sequels to some classic horror films, a few remakes, and alot more slasher films. As you roll into the new millennium you start to see some new trends. There's alot of child ghost movies which are pretty scary (think The Others, The Ring, Ghost Ship), some crazy out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere scary (think Jeepers Creepers), then you've got some more remakes (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, The Amityville Horror) But then they bring in the movies that psychologically screw with you. The movies such as the Saw trilogy, Hostile, and Turistas. These movies are based on torture and inhumane acts of violence but it seems as though its never been done before, at least not to this extent.

So the point in this is whether or not movies have gone too far. I don't think so, I think its all apart of the evolution of film making. Bringing something new to the table and it seems to be working. Although these newer movies are disturbing its nothing new from what goes on in the real world.
