The most beautiful places you've traveled to

After my semester abroad, traveling became an addiction. Since my return, I've only left the U.S. once. But that doesn't mean that I haven't seen some beauty both stateside and worldwide.

One of the most beautiful places I've been is Egypt. I stayed mostly in Cairo, but traveled to Alexandria and Ein el Sokna for a few days. Cairo is a bustling city, full of contrast. The ancient history of the pyramids and Sphinx in Giza watch over the city and Memphis is near, holding a giant statue of Ramses. Museums full of artifacts, art and history are astounding. But it's a modern city, with television, pop music, movies and Internet cafes galore. MTV flashes present day pop stars as well as those from 30 years ago. Alexandria is much more European in feel, but still has the same wonderment of history in the ruins and library. The seafood is fresh, the people are friendly and you can't help but drink in the beautiful sunsets along the Mediterranean Sea. Ein el Sokna is a gorgeous beach town along the Red Sea. Quietly nestled on the edge of the desert, the sea breezes blow and the bustle of Cairo seems worlds away.

Ghana is beautiful for other reasons. The people are so warm and inviting. The lifestyle is laid back and there is always a reason to celebrate life. From the drier northern region, to the lush greenery of the rain forest around Lake Volta to the long stretches of coastline, Ghana holds something for everyone. Accra, the capitol, doesn't seem like a city on the sea, but it is one. From the heart of the car horns and sellers, Labadi Beach is only a 20 minute trotro ride. The colors, sights and tastes of Ghana are so bright and rich, it is hard to take it all in at once.

Another one of my favorite beautiful places is New Mexico, specifically Albuquerque. The red mesas give the entire landscape a warm tone. The people are laid-back and the community feels artistic. The Sandia Mountains make the perfect backdrop as the sun goes down, causing them to look like the watermelon they're named after. Adobe homes give a sense of history and heritage.

Finally, I couldn't talk about beautiful places without mentioning the Texas Hill Country. Sure, I'm a native, but that doesn't mean I haven't traveled. Quaint towns pop up along the long and windy stretches of farm and ranch roads. If you're ever in Texas, get off the highway and take the back roads. It's worth the extra time. Hills rise and fall, oak trees fill in the landscape, becoming home to birds and squirrels or shade from the sun to cattle or deer. The Hill Country is also home to many wineries. Texas is the ninth largest wine producing state in America, and they are producing some delicious wines. I recommend taking a detour or two for a sampling. Or make a day out of tasting. There is so much to do in towns like Boerne, Fredricksburg or Marble Falls. Find a nice bed and breakfast (it's not hard) and enjoy a quiet weekend full of relaxed, southern hospitality.
