Television can be informative and educational; it gives us the world news with a push of a button and we don't have to buy a newspaper for it, when we have heard enough we can switch it off.
The problem with television is that it has stopped becoming a part of our life but for many people what their life focuses on. The financial problems that the world is in at the moment means for many television is the only source of entertainment.
One of the best ways to stop television from consuming your life is to look at how much of your time you are actually watching television, the next step is to think about the programmes you do actually want to watch and what you can live without.
Many television packages such as Cable and Satellite have recordable options for programs if you are without a recording device which means you won't miss your program if you choose to do something else with your time.
People like to watch television after a long day at work, but instead of sitting down in front of the television all night, think about other things that can be done, such as a walk around the block, reading a book, make some occasions cards or even play a family board game.
Do something that makes your mind active and keeps you focused and uses some brain energy, many people find it difficult to go to sleep when they have been watching television as the mind becomes bored but people who read a book before bed time find it easier to go to sleep sooner.
Television is took for granted, not so many decades ago many people did not own a television as it could not be afforded and many people made their own entertainment of an evening, such as baking cakes, knitting, reading or going for a walk.
If television is taken out of our lives we will soon find things to do that are entertaining and quite often do something that the results can be seen from such as knitting, the mind is a powerful tool and it needs to be entertained, whilst we think the brain likes to consume a lot of television it actually does not.
Make a plan of activities that could be done throughout the week maybe one or two an evening every night of the week depending how much time is available and try to stick to it, soon you will find that your evenings have been taken up by more interesting things and you will feel more energised.
If the family is involved and there is one or two nights in the week that you substitute activities for movie night then this will make watching television more appreciated whilst also being aware that you have not watched television all night every week.
Television is supposed to be a part of life for entertainment when there is nothing else to do; literally but not as a way of life.
