Movie reviews: Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny

As sasquatch, the devil, majic mushrooms, K.G. and Jables grace the silver screen, one can only come to a singular conclusion: Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny is upon us.
This film is essentially a parody of how the band Tenacious D was formed and became the greatest rock band ever.
The film opens as a young J.B., Jack Black, runs away from his oppressive parents to Hollywood. Once there he stumbles across street musician K.G., Kyle

Gass. The two eventually form Tenacious D.
The problem is, they are not the greatest rock band ever. As a result, the two set out on a quest to find the P.O.D. (Pick of Destiny).
The P.O.D. is actually a tooth of Satan, and has been passed down from rock legend to rock legend throughout history. The duo must travel to the highly fortified Rock and Roll Museum, over come two trigger-happy stoner security guards, and a massive grid of lasers to secure their rightful place in history as rock legends.
OK, I'm going to play it straight with you guys. If you like the comedy of Jack Black and Tenacious D, go see this movie because you will absolutely love it. If you don't like this particular brand of comedy thenduh-you probably shouldn't go see the movie.
The film also features a plethora of celebrity cameos, such as David Grohl playing Satan, Tim Robbins playing a crippled vagrant, Ben Stiller (who also produced the film) playing a guitar store clerk, and Ronnie James Dio portraying himself.
I thought this movie was hilarious, the opening sequence with a young Jables rocking out and the Strawberry River sequence were worth the cost of a ticket alone. I was constantly laughing throughout the film.
However, sometimes hilarity alone simply isn't enough. While this movie has an abundance of the funny, it is lacking in other areas. Namely plot, or the lack there of. The film's plot is thin and flimsy, but then again fans of Tenacious D are likely seeing the film to laugh, not to be intellectually stimulated.
In reality, the only reason the lack of plot bothered me, is that it made the movie drag in between scenes of funniness. I would love to give this film three stars, but that wouldn't be fair to my inner-critic. So instead I give the film 2 stars out of 4. But somehow that doesn't seem fair to my inner-stoner.

Fun Fact: The band's name is derived from a term used by sportscaster Marv Albert about the tenacious defense of the NBA's New York Knicks.
