The Weaver

Liliath was mostly left alone in her luxurious prison. The shackles made it hard for her to pace in agitation and once again she was tempted just to remove them. A few times she sensed that someone was trying to contact her, but she knew it was too risky to use her flame. She was often checked on and she could not be certain the person contacting her through the veil was a friend or the Dometi trying to lure her.

Periodically and randomly the Dometi would show up. She would sit and they would eat honey-cakes and have tea in a civilized fashion. The conversation was rather repetitive and Liliath was getting more stubborn. She was far more determined to escape than to marry her oaf of a son. Although the thought of the man did not repulse her so much as the thought of being enchanted to enjoy the life the Dometi would inflict upon her. She racked her brain contemplating very carefully every escape plan that occurred to her. Occasionally she reached through the connection she had made between her and Raith. She sensed he was alive and in immense pain. She would linger in the contact lending him the support of her presence. She became more anxious and determined to escape.

The fifth escape plan she developed seemed the most ingenious one she had yet thought of. The key was that the Dometi assumed that her abilities were limited to the abilities of the Angelus. She decided she could attack a servant and knock the person unconscious. Then she could steal his or her clothes and alter her features to mimic theirs. Then she would just have to walk out. Unfortunately, her plan was hindered by two difficulties that she could foresee. First, she would have to knock out the servant without raising an alarm. She was no skilled soldier and she had no more strength than the average woman. Secondly, usually the servants came in pairs. Her father had told her she could use the Ael fire as a weapon just as the Aether could be one. If she ran out of time she would make the attempt anyway. By then she would have nothing to lose.

She continued her shuffling pacing catching herself before she nearly tripped for the tenth time. She stopped and looked around the room again. There was nothing there to keep her busy. Even sitting out it the garden was no longer an option. In the last few weeks it had snowed an incredible amount. More snow than she had seen in a lifetime. At first it was a thick wet snow that melted somewhat during the crisp daylight. Then it was a powder snow
