When you say small hole, do you mean large enough to drive a truck thru, or just big enough to fit your hand inside?
Well, if it's the latter, you can have it repaired in no time.
Start by "cleaning the hole". You can do this by simply cutting the edge of the drywall. It's important to start with a hole as square as possible.
Once you have your hole squared, take a piece of drywall slightly larger than the hole itself. It should overlap all edges by 2-3 inches. Then you score the underside of the drywall like you were going to cut it. Snap-off the drywall leaving the paper on the edges where you overlapped. Now you should be left with a "plug" roughly the size of your hole. Apply joint compound all around the hole. Insert the plug, and squeeze out the excess compound with a spackle knife.
Your hole has been fixed. No screws, no nails, and in no time.
Once the joint compound has dried, sand lightly and prime and paint as normal. Good luck!
