The insane, vile, religious extremism of Southern leaders, from 1820 on, is what led to the Civil War. The Southern leaders said repeatedly what they started the war about - slavery. Specifically to spread slavery. Slavery was from God, ordained "of God.'
Why did they have to spread slavery?
Because it was choking the South to death. Slavery had to spread or it would "be like burning us slowly to death" said the governor of Florida. The hyper-abundance of slaves, was not only destroying the South economically, so many slaves was a very real physical threat. The "great success" of breeding millions of slaves - often by force - was now a "tiger by the tail" that the Southern leaders had but one solution for - spread slavery.
Spread it by legislation, spread it by threats, spread it by war, it did not matter - just spread it.
As Toombs screamed to a crowd of cheering Southerners "Expand - or perish!" He was talking about expanding slavery.
Think I'm kidding? Or wrong? No, I wish I were.
The Civil War was not fought by the South to protect slavery, or states rights, as some have said, but to SPREAD slavery by any means necessary, violent cruel means, deceptions, threats, whatever it took. The Civil War was a violent attempt to squash states to decide for themselves to have slavery or not.
Oh, I know, we were all taught, in absolute political correctness, that the Civil War had "many causes". And everyone was a sincere good fellow, everyone meant well, and by golly, slavery was going to end anyway, so the Civil War was unnecessary. And the Southern leaders were "states rights men".
I used to believe that nonsense, until google books digitized 100 million pages or so, of 19th century publications - books, newspapers, documents. Almost everything taught in our schools about the Civil War is is pathetic white washing of an entire century. Even history books, written by very brilliant historians, such as James McPherson, are correct enough, but very careful not to say anything "politically incorrect" that might irritate Southern "honor."
The problem is, the truth, no matter how gently expressed, with irritate the Southern apologist. But 150 years have passe, we can speak and hear the truth about the
