Reactions to Ann Coulter's use of the term "faggot": Implications of political 'jokes'

by GOPMOM

I will not attempt to defend Ann Coulter, who (loosely) referred to Presidential hopeful John Edwards as a "faggot" this past weekend. Of course, that is an unacceptable word to use when referring to anyone unless you are one gay man speaking to another or you are still in junior high. I did watch the entire speech, though, and have to point out that if you only view the 30 second sound byte out of context, her comment seems quite harsh.

Funny, but harsh. And that is exactly where we are today as Conservatives. We can't even make a joke out of liberal Hollywood's oversensitivity. It's a double standard that I am having a hard time living with. I'm one of the lucky ones because I have an editor my husband. He used to say, "You can't say that out loud". Now it's, "I can't put that on the net." Sheesh, like I'm afraid of offending anyone.

I can understand why the young, college age crowd at the conference was a bit surprised at the comment. They are too young to remember when homosexuality wasn't a political topic. They are too young to remember when it wasn't dinner table conversation to discuss your sexual preferences. They are most definitely too young to remember a time when it wasn't cool and glamorous to be gay. And let's not kid ourselves. Hollywood has been on a mission to make gay "hip" for a long time.

OK, fine, whatever. Live and let live. But do we really need so much media attention focused on what amounts to be a speculated 10% of the population? Do gay people really watch that much TV?

Anyway, why such a rush to condemn Ms. Coulter when no one said "Boo" a few years back, when Kanye West proclaimed "George Bush hates black people." Why did no one rush to protect and defend the President from such a slur? Isn't that statement just as shocking, just as ludicrous as suggesting John Edwards is gay?

Where is the media outrage over Bill Maher's assertion that the assassination of the Vice President of the United States would save people's lives? Ummmm, I think that one might just be a bit over the top. Why hasn't Mr. Maher been fired over that one? (Or has he? I haven't seen the news since Tuesday AM.)

As I said, I won't defend Ms. Coulter's comment. I will laugh every time I hear it. And I will chuckle every time I hear the term "Coulter Cash." Leave it to a liberal to actually raise money over such a harmless joke. Maybe Mr. Edwards should donate the $100,000 to the Anti-Defamation League. I'm sure that would win him some votes. But only 10%.
