Here in Ireland it's the date we all wait patenitly to arrive. It is up there with Christmas and Easter. It is the festival that's celebrated the world over, and we Irish are renowned for celebrating.
First as a dominant Catholic country we attend mass where we witness the blessing of the shamrock, this is then followed by Parades throughout all major/small towns/villages.People are encouraged to dress up usally in green, orange and gold,to represent our heritage. The atmosphere is electric during these parades with brightly colored floats and music to be heard all over the land.
After these parades, the majority of people go on to pubs to follow up even more enjoyment, watching the bar personal float around with silly leprechaun out-fits and some band playing an accordion and fiddle in the corner.
If like me you prefer to stay at home with the family, why not do it the Irish way and start by cooking 'boiled bacon and cabbage'for dinner followed by 'hot Irish coffee',then when you feel brave enough dress up in Irish costumes, invite the neighbors over, load up with Irish music c.ds and throw the biggest loudest party your street as ever seen....oh and dont forget 'THE IRISH STOUT'.
