to be of the highly artistic nature are not well received upon initial release due to the subject material or particular style of the director. For instance last year Phillip K. Dick's, 'A Scanner Darkly' was produced into a film, using a relatively new style of film making combining loose animation drawn over the film stock already shot of live action actors. The movie was panned in every review I read of the usual bloated effort of most critics in respectable venues. The film has it's flaws, but the inventive storytelling techniques were overlooked due to the format in which it was presented. Where as a film such as, 'The Matrix', with its simple story borrowing from countless sources was extremely well received due to the effects used in the movie. Never mind the wooden dialog and somewhat over indulgent philosophical messages of the film, the scene where Keanu Reeves ducked from the bullet was dam cool. Audiences flock to movies and movie theaters for the effects of the film, not the story. This has always been the case, mainstream films are our escapist reality from the confusing and mundane realities of our lives. In many ways you can consider movies today equivalent to that of drug use, it gives the user a slight mental break just long enough to leave you wanting more. As time goes on this use becomes worse, and consistent, a tolerance builds up. In order to get back that high, the fix needs to be more intense; louder, bigger, always better. Like any good dealer will tell you, the money is always made on the comeback. Keep your customer happy and they always come back for more. This is how it is, and how it will remain. There are new ideas consistently from the filmmakers of the world, but the audiences just will not let them in. For now, if your looking for diverse film making check out your local, smaller venues, if not there's always Ghostrider, I hear the effects are sick.
