How to create a sensible weight-loss plan

by Timmy Duncan

Created on: November 02, 2010

Creating a sensible weight loss plan is nowhere near as difficult as many people believe it to be. It does require a little bit of time and effort, but these are minor things when compared to the benefits you will bring to your overall health by doing them. Creating a sensible weight loss program for yourself also increases the chances that you will be able to keep the weight off long term by developing good habits rather than crash dieting.

Many of us want the fast and easy approach to weight loss rather than doing the work involved to develop a sensible weight loss plan, but the fact of the matter is that fast and easy simply doesn’t exist when it comes to weight loss. At least, not in a healthy way that will be sustainable over the long term. The magic bullet is a figment of our collective imagination as a society and we need to let go of those ideas and focus on a sensible diet and exercise plan if we want to lose weight and be able to keep it off. Slow and steady not only wins this race, but it also gets you through it in much better condition.

To start with, you might want to speak to your primary care physician about your weight loss goals and work with them to come up with an action plan. Your doctor may be able to refer you to a nutritionist or recommend a sensible diet that will work with your lifestyle. The key to a sensible diet is for it to not only cut your calories and meet all your nutritional needs, but also for it to be something that is doable for you and something that you are able to stick with. If a diet is too rigid or strict, chances are it isn’t going to last long. Finding the middle ground is the best course of action.

Once you have gotten started on your diet, ask your doctor what they would recommend for an exercise program. You always want to make sure that your doctor has cleared you for whatever activity you are choosing to do. Some people find it helpful to work with a personal trainer in the beginning of their weight loss journey. Even if the expense is too much for you to continue long term, many people find it helpful to schedule a few sessions so that they get the basics of what they need to be doing and can continue on their own.

Remember that the key to any sensible weight loss program is sustainability. If it is not something that you can stick with long term, it isn’t going to work for you. There is a solution for you, you just need to find it.
