Of course money is not the root of all evil. The phrase as its genesis in one of the new testament gospels. In the book of Luke I believe, Christ in teaching his followers said "be on guard from all types of greed because a mans life is not about his possessions". In the book of Timothy the apostle Paul states "for the love of money is the root of all evil."
So it is "the love'" of it that leads people into unsavoury actions and not the object itself, which frankly ,would be a ridiculous notion. Money is an instrument of exchange that is used to acquire the things which we need and want or so it seems. The essence of the matter is that the intent of those who came up with the idea and who developed the monetary system was not noble. Barter: the exchange of one item for another was people based but money was a way of taking away individual choice and concentrate power in the hands of a few. Money as we have come to know it is made from metals and in higher denominations paper. With the march of tecnology coupled with the sophistication of greed, we now have plastic money (credit cards) which by itself is not a bad idea save for the built in features of usury and theft by its issuers. So money with further observation is not really a method of exchange but a tool used to exert control and wield power by the ruthless minority over the hapless majority. So now we clearly see that money as no real value except for the amount of it that is circulated. The central control of it means that all men are at the mercy of the controllers.
The necessity of having it makes the desire to have it the most dominant of all our concerns. The activities to obtain it occupies almost all of our waking hours. The shortage of it created by wage controls, turns desire into obsession and this is where the moral line is breached. The truth of the matter is that the system of money is diabolical and the individual who bases his or her life solely on its pursuit will do anyhting for it. This often times means committing some act of evil such as stealing, prostitution and things of that nature. One instead must love people, love your Creator and also love yourself as much as you love others and not money. Loving an object is idolatry and that is where the system wants you so that their will, "will be done".
