With winter arriving soon, families are rushing to travel before blizzards come a calling. There aren't many metropolitans within striking distance from Des Moines. But one is about 300 miles away and you don't have to drive! Soak that in for a minute. Let the statement marinate in your head for a while.
You can go to a metropolitan city 300 miles away and not have to drive. You're probably thinking.
"Sign me up!"
If you're in Des Moines, you have the option to take the Express Bus. Express Buses run seven days a week, twice a day. For only four dollars, there are one-way trips to Iowa City available. It's a two-hour ride with no layovers. For eight dollars, you can buy a round trip. But, who wants an excursion to Hawkeye Land?! You want that escapade to see Wrigley Field!
Express bus trips to Chicago are six-hour rides and cost $60. It costs double that to fill your gas tank! They are safer and roomier than riding a Greyhound. You don't have to reserve two-weeks ahead of time to get the lowest rate. The $60 fare is the same price period. While boarding the bus, you realize that money is being saved for the fun stuff!
Now, when you get to the Windy City, be careful. Express Buses don't have their own terminals. They don't use Greyhound Bus terminals. You will be dropped off at a designed stop. It's important to remember the address. In two days, the Express will pick up passengers from that particular spot. If you miss it, you'll have to wait for another bus, the following day!
While in Chicago, you can take a cab or ride the L train. In most areas, cabs are the safer pick. Late at night, the L might be invaded by young street toughs. They look for travelers to rob or mug. There is usually one transit cop for each stop. However, be vigilant. Here are some rules for riding the L day and night.
1) Keep your belongings near you.
2) Don't flash cash or credit cards.
3) Don't talk on your cell phone.
4) Watch your surroundings.
5) Be cordial to strangers. But, don't be naive to their intentions.
6) Always stay awake.
Criminals look for any advantage when scoping their victims. If they see a cell phone talker, they know that person can be distracted. A pickpocket can sit nearby, steal their wallet without being noticed. If they see a passenger dozing off, they can be assaulted.
