How to become a concert promoter

by Ryan Ives Austria

Created on: October 31, 2010

Before you can engage yourself into promoting a concert you should ask yourself several questions and you should be able to answer them. These questions will help you figure out if you are capable of promoting a concert no matter what type of concert it will be. If you will be able to follow these questions and answer them on your own, you have the potential of becoming a concert producer.

Do you know where to start?

If your answer is no, the first thing you should do is to know the concert details. You should know what type of concert it is, you should know who will perform in the concert and you should also know every tiny bit of detail that will help you promote it.

If your answer is yes, you can proceed to the next question.

Who are the people who will be interested in the concert?

For sure you won’t be able to promote a “rap” concert to people who listen to rock and roll, romantic music, classical music and reggae music. The point here is that you should be able to know the people that will be interested in the concert that you will promote. And when you have determined the type of potential audience that you can invite to the concert, you should also know where to find them.

Once you have successfully determined the type of potential audience that you will have, you will spend less time in promoting your concert to people who will not be interested in it. After that you can proceed to the next question.

What type of promoting materials do you need? Do you have the resources?

Flyers, streamers and text messages are some of the forms or types of materials that you can use to promote. Now, to further attract your potential audience you should be able to create a unique and attractive type of promotional material. What does this mean? You need to create a flyer that will make people say “Oh, this is something new”. And when it comes to resources, sometimes is it better to have a helping hand from a friend since it will cost you less and it will be more fun to be promoting.

Now you know what the questions you need to ask yourself are. But before you can actually ask these questions and start being a promoter, you should know first how to get in that position. First thing you need to do is to step at the first stepping stone. What does this mean? It means that you should engage yourself as a staff of a concert like setting up the stage or helping out in the back stage. You could also be the one who handles the printing or designing of the promotional materials or you could be the one in charge of the wardrobe.

Once you have penetrated their “crew”, you will be able to get the concert promoter position faster. How will you be able to do that? Since you already know the answer to the questions you need to ask yourself, they will notice that you have a potential in becoming a concert promoter.
