Halloween Reflections
This day brings me back to my childhood in Connecticut. I will always remember the costumes and the fun times the family had going door to door with mom and dad. As I am now a lot older I can also remember my own child on those Halloween nights we went trick or treating. He was always afraid in the beginning of the many masks and costumes. As he got a little older he just had the best of times and we have many photos of those nights. I particularly remember one Halloween where it was not all fun and frolic for my young son.
I was pretty close to closing the door on this dark evening, as there appeared two men in dark clothing walking up the sidewalk to our house. They were both carrying a torch of fire and a scalpel with black hoods over their faces. It was indeed not a child and they did not speak. I got to shaking my own self, let alone my little son. As I closed the door behind them, I will never forget my son's face .This night was a night my son had problems with for many years to come. He would often tell me they were in the house and be so scared of the dark as he would tell me those men with the black hoods were in the living room. I even had to move his bed in another direction so he would not be able to see out into the living room at night.
This went on for several years as he really was frightened from this particular Halloween night. It wasn't until my son got a lot older that he believed me, telling him that those hooded men were never coming back to our home. I had never experienced this as a child but I am sure I did get scared back in those days. After all that is what it was all about. Tricks and ghosts and not only candy. I miss the younger days of Halloween, and in this day and age do not see Halloween anything like years gone past..
With the horror stories told in the media of pins in apples and poison in the foods, amongst a host of other unbelievable occurrences done on Halloween, I am amazed at the parents who still take their children out trick or treating. I still give out candy and when I feel that it is time to shut the door and turn out the light I do just that. My father still carves a pumpkin and my son still dresses up but it is just not like it was back in the good old days. This used to be a holiday that my brothers and I loved when we were young and it does not seem to be the same holiday we enjoyed many years ago .Nonetheless it still remains Hallows Eve. The day before All Saints Day.
