Casting a circle for magical rituals can be done a couple of different ways. You can do it the drawn out, "flashy" way, which is perfect for coven use. And you can do it the played down, see the lines drawn in your head way, that tends to work better for the solitary practitioner. Whichever way you do it is the right way for you. There really is no right and wrong in Paganism, as long as you respect nature, Earth and other people at all times.
Casting a circle the “flashy” way usually begins with cleansing the circle with some sage. First of all the entire group will need to stand in a circle formation, with the coven leader(s) in the middle. The next step is to call the corners. Most people just do a simple chant for this, while some groups sing. Calling the corners is in effect calling all points of direction and the Gods and Goddesses that represent them. This is done while facing each direction and once you have called the fourth your circle is cast. Breaking the circle is about the same, you just go the opposite way, thanking the Gods and Goddesses and bidding them farewell.
The simple, solitary, way of casting the circle, which is the way I do it when I am doing my own personal rituals, is usually done in a seated position, rather than standing. Seated at the alter light the sage and let the smoke flow along everything on the altar, and yourself. Imagine it cleansing away any negativity. Now, imagine a bright white light circling you and your altar in protective energy. You must be able to picture this happening in your mind for it to truly be cast. This white halo about you will protect you from any negativity that may try to sneak in while you have the gates to the other worlds open.
It is important to keep that imaginary circle in your mind while you are working. After the circle is complete you can invoke your God and Goddess and do your work. When done bid ado to the deities and then focus on the circle again. Watch it as it dissipates into the ether. Once all traces of it are gone you are free and safe to leave your altar space. This type of circle casting taps into the powers of the mind and the natural lay lines in the earth.
