Dr. Andrew Rush came into the elementary school building and quickly found the principal’s office. His wife Rachel was there-they had both been summoned for some type of emergency involving their little daughter Elizabeth.
“All right, what’s going on?” said Andrew. “Is Elizabeth all right?”
“Yes.” Rachel said. “Apparently she did something really bad and her teacher sent her to the principal’s office.”
Andrew had never even considered the possibility of his little girl doing something bad.“What could she have done? She just turned seven. She’s never done anything wrong in her life.”
“I have no idea,” said Rachel. “But we’ll find out.” It was only a few days before Christmas. There were holiday decorations hung around the office.
“Is this that same low-life principal, Mr. Jones?” Andrew said. Rachel immediately tried to quiet her husband. “He ought to get his own act together.” Mr. Jones had a large white beard and Elizabeth had mentioned that some of her friends at school had seen their mothers kissing Santa Claus. Andrew assumed it was probably Mr. Jones.
The principal stepped out of his office and greeted the doctor and his wife.
“Hello Mrs. Rush. And Mr. Rush.”
“It’s Dr. Rush,” Andrew said, not very respectfully.
“Oh, I’m sorry.
”“Boy, you must be in great demand this time of year,” Andrew continued. “I bet every department store in the area wants you.” Rachel again gave her husband a look. Mr. Jones basically ignored the comments and continued.
“Now I have your daughter in my office. She was sent to me by her teacher because of her actions.” He opened the door and led Andrew and Rachel into the room. Elizabeth was sitting on a chair with a strongly defiant look on her very youthful face.
“Hello dear,” said Rachel.
“Hello,” answered Elizabeth, still maintaining a firm jaw.
“Elizabeth,” said Mr. Jones, “Perhaps you could tell your parents what you did.”
“All right. Well, Billy Sullivan said something bad about my family, so I popped him.”
“Yes, she punched him in the face and gave him a bloody nose and he was crying,” Mr. Jones said
Her parents were both stunned by this. Elizabeth had never shown even the slightest hint of violence.
