Magic the Gathering card analysis: Guile

Guile is a rare blue elemental incarnation creature from the Lorwyn expansion set of magic the gathering. This card was also printed as a rare in the duel deck: Jace vs. Chandra expansion. It costs 3 colorless mana and 3 blue mana to cast Guile and put it onto the battlefield. This creature has a toughness of 6 and a power of 6 with abilities that read Guile can't be blocked except by three or more creatures. If a spell or ability you control would counter a spell, instead exile that spell and you may play that card without paying its mana cost. When Guile is put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library. This is a good value especially for blue and it works well with decks that use a lot of counter spells especially those which are also able to force everyone to shuffle their graveyards into their decks multiple times.

The truth is that against most decks the second of these abilities are going to have very few actual value. The reason for this is that if the opponent has no way to bring a card from the graveyard back into play then it simply does not matter if it is in the graveyard or exiled from the game. On the other hand if you run into someone who is using flashback or other cards that let them play from the graveyard this can be very useful and even if not its a 6/6 creature which is going to be hard if not impossible for them to block.

In constructed play this card can be very useful in almost any blue deck. If you have a lot of counter spells then it can have a huge effect against a number of decks that can be very dangerous for blue. If you are playing a creature deck this is hard to block and well priced for blue as well. In general though if you are not playing heavy blue this is not going to be easy enough to use.

In draft and sealed deck play this card is really only going to be able to use two of these abilities effectively. The difficulty in blocking is important but in a forty card deck the odds of this being killed and found again is actually pretty good which means that you should be able to cast this a few times if you need to.
