"I am imperfect, but I am loved."
That came to mind after reading comments under a video of a boy voicing his opinion to his mother that he did not believe in God. The despondent mother, being a Christian herself did not know how to respond to such a statement from her son and angrily went off on a tyrant screaming there would be no more Christmas and he would receive no presents, continuing to angrily spout they would be attending church weekly, from now on!
The written comments that followed was just as theatrical as the video that I had just watched.
Many atheists came to the forefront voicing their opinion what a hypocrite this woman was to call herself a Christian. They went on to say, this was why they chose for themselves what right and wrong was without having a "God" or deity shoved down their throats telling them they would burn in hell if they did not "conform" to a Christian life.
Therein lies the myth. There is no demand of conformity that one has to be perfect to be a Christian. Every Christian matures at their own pace in hierarchy. No Christian is perfect. To be a Christian means that you know you are broken. You know you are a sinner and you know you will make mistakes until the day you die.
Jesus does not demand a perfect life. He asks us to accept His perfection, so that it will cover our imperfections on the day when we will all atone for our actions.
To be a Christian, I know I do not deserve to be forgiven, but I am.
I will not sit on the fence and walk a monotone life trying to be "good" while denouncing my faith in Jesus Christ. It is impossible. I will embrace all my emotions.
I may lose my temper and rant and rave. There may be times, I am mean or spiteful. There will be times I cry myself to sleep and worry so much that I have not a fingernail left on my finger. I will make mistakes and cuss, gossip and judge.
Yet, everyday my walk with Jesus leads me to a better place where my conscious decision to listen for Him, will show me a more skillful way to handle these emotions.
I am a Christian because I know I am imperfect. My strength, my salvation is Jesus who loves me. That is all He asks from us in return, not perfection.
