Book reviews: Scientology, The Fundamentals of Thought, by L. Ron Hubbard

L. Ron Hubbard wrote Scientology: The Fundamentals Of Thought  in the early 1950’s. It was the first published book he wrote on the spirit. Up until then his non-fiction books had been on the mind, under the subject name of Dianetics.  By the time Dianetics was in full bloom it was evident to L. Ron Hubbard and the practitioners of Dianetics, that there was more to man that just the mind. The phenomena of past lives kept being encountered by Dianetics counselling. Man was a spirit and some kind of life force and source of energy himself. This subject had to be researched. This was

Scientology.

That energy source, or life-force that is the person, needed a word, as sprit – which was the usual word, was not sufficient for research needs. Mr. Hubbard used the Greek letter theta, which meant life, and with an “n” coined the word “thetan.”

It was found that the thetan followed certain fundamental laws, and when he learned of these laws, instead of being affect of the world around him, he could start to exercise control of it.

This book, Scientology: The Fundamentals Of Thought, is an elementary summation of these laws.

Some people might say that they cannot see a spirit so why should they believe it exists. But not being able to see something does not necessarily disprove its existence. Gravity cannot be seen. Nor can life. They both exercise fundamental laws.

As a simple example of life and its laws, think of the following. Life likes things that are survival for it. We further know that life moves closer to what it likes. An inanimate object cannot do that. A plant growing to the sun, a puppy rushing to its master, and a mother cradling her child, are all examples of this. Thus a law of life could be that life reduces the distance between itself and what is survival for it. One might wonder about the use of such knowledge. So let us look at the other side of this law. Life will like more what is closer to it. So, if you want that puppy, or other life to like you, get closer to it. Given time, you will be liked.

This book Scientology: The Fundamentals Of Thought is about such laws.

One law is the Cycle of Action, whereby the components of everything you try to accomplish are laid bare. There is also a chapter about the eight basic urges within us that guide us through our decisions. Just knowing what these urges are makes life a lot easier to predict and live.

While there is much information on you as a spirit, there are also the Scientology processes at the back of the book that unlock the life force that is you. Scientology divides into theory as well as practice. Processing is the practical application of Scientology on a counselling level. There are plenty of these processes. But you need another person to do them with.

The book is not overly long. It has a juicy glossary at the back, explaining hard to understand words. It is a basic book of the theory and practice of Scientology for beginners. It comes in hard bound, soft cover and audio book versions, and has recently been republished.
