The right running shoe is top priority for a serious runner in order to prevent injuries to their feet, as well as their entire body. A specific running shoe differs for runners due to a runner's size, shape, weight, and most importantly, their gait or stride. So the right run specific shoe is important for both the serious runner, or the run enthusiast.
It all starts with the feet! As you start building your run mileage it is important to take care of your feet. Whether it’s a technique to do a dead lift, or doing a cross over on the basketball court, whether it’s a 5K sprint, or a 26.2 mile marathon, your feet needs support and this support determines the overall health and well-being of your entire body. That being said, why do some people just buy fashionable shoes at a hefty price without thinking about how important it is to find the ‘right shoe’ instead of the ‘coolest shoe’? The answer is most likely – they don’t know.
Getting fitted for the right pair of running shoe at a run specific store will put you on the road to a healthier, safer, and more productive run lifestyle, than just an athletic shoe that looks good and is comfortable. There are many types of runners, and the type of runner you are can be determined by visiting an expert at a run specific shoe store where they can analyze your ‘gait’ or stride. Once they determine what type of stride you take they can recommend several shoes that fit your physical needs.
Most individuals will walk into a shoe store and find a shoe that looks good and feels comfortable. But this ‘comfort fit’ may be the demise of longevity as you train or get serious about your running – even if it’s a 1 mile run. Comfortable shoes may not cater to those who overpronate or supinate. These type of runners need a more ‘stable’ shoe or a shoe that is made for motion control. Yes, there are different types of comfortable shoes to pick from that offer stability and motion control. And if you find the right shoe for you, your future as a runner will be a long lasting one.
Once your feet go, due to poor support and the lack of stability, so will your workouts. One great thing about a run specific shoe store is that most will allow you to ‘test drive’ the shoe to make sure you feel comfortable in them, while, all the long, supporting your feet based on your pronation. If the shoe doesn’t work, go back and try another. Try this with the mall type stores: Foot Lockers and Athlete’s Foot. You can’t!
Don’t take your feet for granted! Treat them with respect and care by finding the right shoe, and the rest of your body will thank you!
