Many people visit Georgia looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy what nature has to offer. For these relaxation seekers, Georgia offers visitors some of the most spectacular nature views in the southeast. A camping trip is a great alternative to a fast-paced, action packed trip. The North Georgia mountains is an area famous for great camping spots. Let's look at a few great camping areas in North Georgia.
Helen, Ga ~ The German-inspired little town of Helen is booming with bed and breakfasts lodges, cabins and campsites for those looking to head out of the city for vacation. Shopping and dining in Helen is limited to a few miles of businesses on one street. The rest of Helen and surrounded areas is dedicated to quiet riverside camping and lodging and mountain top views. Visit helenga.org/accommodations/campgrounds to plan your camping trip to this area.
Cloudland Canyon, Ga ~ Nestled in the far northwest corner of the state, Cloudland Canyon, Ga offers visitors spectacular views of the canyon along with Lookout Mountain and surrounding states. Hiking trails offer grandeur views of the area. Area visitor attractions include Lookout Mountain and Rock City. Camping is the perfect way to enjoy this area of the state. Visit gastateparks.org/CloudlandCanyon for information on camping and other lodging options at Cloudland Canyon.
While a large number of Georgia campsites are located in the Northern part of the state, great camping spots can be found all over the state including South Georgia and coastal Georgia.
Cumberland Island ~ The Cumberland Island National Seashore is part of the National Park Service. A shore boat ride from St. Mary's Ga., this beautiful, almost untouched area of the Southeast makes a perfect camping spot. Visitors to the island will enjoy a few amenities, a visitors station, bike rentals, a general store and hotel. The island's main attractions are the undeveloped beaches, the wild horses that roam the island and the ruins of mansions inhabited by early wealthy settlers. Information on camping on Cumberland Island can be found at nps.gov/cuis.
Okefenokee Swamp ~ Head down south to the Georgia / Florida border and experience a different world, the Okefenokee Swamp. A massive 438,000 acre wetland, the Okefenokee Swamp is home to an estimated 12,000 of the country's alligators. Many other species and vegetation can be found in this unique Georgia attraction. Boat rides through the swamp are the best way to see all the Okefenokee has to offer. Grab a campsite and spend a few days exploring the mythical legends and expansive wildlife of the Okefenokee Swamp. Stephen C. Foster State Park is a great place to camp. Visit gastateparks.org/StephenCFoster to obtain on camping in the Okefenokee.
