Directed by legendary Bollywood film-maker Yash Chopra, Veer Zaara was released in November 2004 (to coincide with Diwali that year), with the screenplay and dialogue by his son Aditya Chopra (with the father and son team producing the team). It stars Bollywood's blue eyed boy Shah Rukh Khan (he hasn't got blue eyes, but you know what I mean), the gorgeous Preity Zinta and the adorable Rani Mukherjee with strong support from Kiron Kher, Divya Dutta, Boman Irani and Anupam Kher there were also guest appearances from Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini.
One of the taglines for the film was "A love that is an inspiration... and will remain a legend forever."
At over 3 hours in length you might consider this to be too lengthy a movie to sit through but I'd recommend watching it over a couple of sittings rather than avoid it purely because of its length! It really is worth a watch.
PLOT TEASER
Zaara Haayat Khan (Zinta) is on her way from Pakistan to the Punjab in India to scatter a close relative's ashes when her bus crashes. Veer Pratap Singh (Khan), a squadron leader with the Indian Air Force, rescues Zaara (Zinta) by air-lifting her to safety. During this rescue operation she drops her bag containing the ashes and she demands that he retrieve the bag much to his annoyance. He initially thinks she's a spoilt brat until he releases what's in the bag. He decides to help her on her journey to where she wants to scatter the ashes and they start falling for each other on this journey. He asks her for a day of her life in return for saving hers as he wants to show her his India.
Unbeknownst to Veer, Zaara is engaged to be married to Raza, someone who refuses to let the fact that his fiance is in love with another man get in the way of him marrying her. He trumps up some charges against Veer and gets him locked away as a spy.
Over twenty years later, an ambitious but young Pakistani lawyer, Saamiya Sidiqui (Mukherjee), visits Veer in the Pakistani prison where he's been locked away in silence since his incarceration. She wants to know why he was really imprisoned and why he's been silent all these years.
The story slowly unfolds. Why did Veer accept his imprisonment without a fight? What happened to Zaara? Why did she not fight for his freedom?
ACTING/ANALYSIS
Well I have to say that I found the acting of all of the characters to be without fault. Shah Rukh Khan's character is so very loveable and I think he was most definitely the best choice for this role. He portrays all of his
