A bitten tongue is always an unfortunate occurrence. And it is always very irritating and bothersome. However, thankfully, most of the time it is not of a serious nature. It can usually be treated with relative ease and does, usually, heal relatively quickly. More often than not, a bitten tongue occurs while a person is eating. He just unintentionally bites his own tongue while he is chewing his food. However, certain cases of bitten tongues can be quite a bit more serious than those caused by just simply accidental bites during chewing. Certain sporting activities such as football, soccerball, baseball, boxing, taekwondo and many others can result in participants suffering from bitten tongues. Bitten tongues that result from such activities as these sometimes do require medical attention. They sometimes even require stitches. However, most bitten tongues simply occur as accidents while people are chewing their food. These minor cases of bitten tongue can be treated in a few different ways.
The first and perhaps the most obvious method of medically treating a minor case of bitten tongue is applying ice to the injury and to the immediate area around the bite. The ice actually will help to diminish any swelling that might or has already occurred. It will also work to soften the pain by numbing the nerves in the tongue at the site of the bite.
Another way to treat a case of bitten tongue is to apply honey to the bite. The honey actually will form a seal over the wound that works to keep bacteria from entering the injury. This will help the tongue to heal quite a lot faster due to the fact that no infection, or at least not nearly as much, will be present in the wound.
All in all, a bitten tongue usually heals relatively quickly and does not require a great deal of attention. However, the above two treatments that I mentioned should help the healing process to be a little less painful and to be a little faster than is the average. But of course, if anybody has a case of bitten tongue, or in fact any other type of injury, it is always a good idea to get medical attention. This is especially the case if a case of bitten tongue involves excessive bleeding and / or excessive pain or discomfort.
