Casting circles has been around for longer than we can imagine and crosses many different cultures and religions. From Honi the Circle Maker to modern Magick casting circles is a very important step in formal spell craft. While there are many variations to how to cast a circle, here are some of the basic principals of casting a circle for your magick.
The first step in circle casting is getting everything together you will need for the magick you are doing. This means having everything with in arms reach and defiantly inside the circle. Nothing is more frustrating them to be half way thru your work and realize you left something out. This leaves you to cut a door in your circle or breaking your circle and interrupt the energy flow of the magick you are working.
Traditionally, to cast a circle involves walking around your circle Deosil (clockwise) one to three times. With your hand or tool pointing down, walk the circle while reciting your invocation. These invocations can be a call to the deities that you are working with or maybe calling the quarters to help in your majick. Once you have your circle cast seal it by stomping your foot or by stating “as above so below so mote it be”
Once you are done working your magick its time to release the quarters or deities you where working with. Many times they get a bit chaotic if left to break the circle by their selves and may have a negative impact on any magick you are working with them. After you release the forces you are working with its time to close your circle. To close your circle, walk widershins (counterclockwise). Remember never to walk widershins during your craft as this will cause some negative effects as well as release your circle before you magick is done. When you close your circle draw the energy of the circle into a tool or your hands. Once your walk around the circle is compete the closing of your circle have your words of closing. Like this one from Silver Raven Wolf “the circle is open, but never broken. Merry meet and merry part until we merry meet again. So mote it be”. Also, stomping your foot to signal the closing of the circle is another thing to remember.
When we work in a circle it works to focus not only our attention but the attention of the deities we may be asking for help. This gives our spell work more power and energy focused with us for the effect we are asking for. Like everything else in our life magick or not you get out what you put in. So when casting your circle, give it everything you got and it will put your energy out there in a positive way.
