The top ten scariest movie scenes ever

by Gene Patterson

What scares you?  There are a lot of scary scenes from movies over the ages.  When I think of "scary"  I tend to think of horror.  By no means are horror movies the only, "scary" things out there, so I have not limited myself to horror for this list.  Without  further ado, the ten scariest movies scenes:

1.  The Shining:  Danny and the Big Wheel

Young Danny is riding down the hallway on his Big Wheel.  The filming and the sound ratchet up the tension.  Clack, Clack, Clack.   Then his “Shining” power kicks in.  He see the two girls in the blue dresses, finds out what “Redrum” is, sees an avalanche of blood and gets flashes of a brutal murder.  A very vivid and frightening scene

2.   The Marathon Man:  Is It Safe?

Anyone who has seen that scene has to be a little squeamish with the words, “is it safe”.  Similar to Saw or Hostel in the Brutality of the moment within that scene Marathon Man is far far less graphic.  Leaving most of the violence in your head.  Every time I visit the dentist, though, I wonder, “Is it safe?”

3.  Misery:  Breaking the Ankle

This one makes me wince just to think about it.   Annie Puts a board between captured writer, Paul Sheldon ‘s legs, and smashes his ankle. Perhaps she was just inviting the “dirty bird” to stay for a bit.  But it looked painful and to be honest, the scene was well done enough that it actually ”felt” painful.

4.  An American Werewolf in London:  Change Scene

No doubt about it, Watching the transformation from man to wolf, with Creedance Clearwater Revival’s, “Bad Moon Rising” blaring creates quite an image.   I cannot hear that song without thinking of that scene.

5.  Full Metal Jacket.  The First 20 minutes

Anyone who has seen this movie knows it is basically two films.  A short boot camp prequel.  And a long Vietnam war movie.  The Vietnam movie itself is very good.  But the first 20 minutes are incredibly intense.  I went to boot camp not “too” long after seeing this movie.  The boot camp of "Gomer Pyle" and R. Lee Ermey was far scarier and intense than what I went through in real life.  It was scary, but it was also not TOO far removed from reality.  Which made the whole thing even scarier.

6.  The Thing:
