Halloween is an occasion that can be enjoyed by the entire family, including our canine companions. Having Rover partake in the fun and festivities is great as long as you remember safety first. Following these tips will help to ensure that your dog's Halloween is a safe and fun experience.
1. Keep your dog confined in a room with the door closed while trick or treaters are calling. Things can get a little hectic with the door bell ringing, kids coming and going and the door opening and closing, creating ample opportunity for your dog to bolt out the door. Some dogs are frightened by costumes anyway. For your peace of mind and your dog's safety keep him behind closed doors with a toy or some treats to occupy him.
2. If taking your dog trick or treating with you, be sure to have him leashed and supervised by an adult. Kids get caught up in the thrill and excitement of the occasion and are likely to have their attention focused on things other than caring for the dog. Besides it isn't really safe for your dog to be going right up to the doors, where other dogs and pets may be a threat. Your dog is safest on the sidewalk, in the hands of an adult.
3. Ensure your dog is visible in the dark. A reflective collar or flashing light affixed to his collar will make him visible to other trick or treaters and motorists. Also be sure his identification tags are up to date with your contact information. Hopefully it won't be an issue, but should something happen that your dog does get away from you he'll be easily spotted in the dark and his tags will ensure he is returned safely to you.
4. Don't leave your dog outside, unsupervised. Unfortunately there are people that use Halloween as an opportunity to wreak havoc. A helpless, trusting dog can easily fall victim to their antics. Keep him indoors with you, where you know he is safe.
5. Yes there are some of us who love to strip our dogs of every ounce of dignity and dress them in silly costumes. Why not, as long as your dog is a willing participant and safety is the number one priority. Make sure the costume isn't constricting and doesn't have tight elastic or other material that can cut into your dog's skin. Ensure his vision isn't obstructed and don't affix anything around his neck that doesn't easily break apart, as this could lead to strangulation. Your dog will be happiest and safest in a nice simple costume.
6. With Halloween comes lots of treats and goodies. Remember to keep them out of your dog's reach, especially the chocolate bars. Ingesting too much chocolate can make your dog extremely ill and could even be fatal. If you want to indulge your dog for the occasion buy him some special dog treats. He'll be just as happy and you'll know what he's eating.
7. Jack-o-lanterns are a Halloween tradition, but remember they can seriously harm your dog, especially if illuminated with a real candle. Be sure to put your pumpkin on a flat, sturdy surface where your dog can't get at it. Even just sniffing too close can burn your dog's nose, let alone the burn he may suffer if he accidentally knocked it over. Don't leave your jack-o-lantern unattended.
Dogs can enjoy Halloween with the rest of the family as long as a few safety tips are remembered. Ensuring everyone, including Rover, is safe and secure will make Halloween a memorable experience for all. Happy haunting.
