How to make homemade potato chips

Homemade potato chips make a really nice change from those bought in a packet from a shop.

They are one of the easiest things to make at home and one of the only differences from homemade chips / fries is their shape.

So if you like to make your own chips / fries, you’ll have no problem making potato chips.  Also if you’ve never made chips yourself at home, give them a go by following the steps below;

1.  Choose any potato you like to make your potato chips.  Peel the potatoes and place them in cold water.

2.  Slice your potatoes into thin slices.  Slicing the potato can be done by hand or you can slice them using a handle held vegetable slicer.  They can also be made with the slicer attachment of a food processor if your processor has one.

3.  After you slice the potatoes into thin slices, put them back into the cold water.  This stops them from browning / blackening.

4.  The next step is to heat your oil.  You can heat oil in a wok, deep fryer or medium sized pot if you don’t have the other items.  Keep in mind that you will need paper towel to drain the potato chips if you use a wok or pot of oil.

5.  You can test your oil by dropping a single chip into it.  If the chip sizzles and then floats to the top of the oil, the oil is hot enough.

6.  Drain the water off your sliced potatoes and drop them into the oil a few at a time until the basket of your deep fryer is reasonably full but not over filled.  Do not leave the deep fryer at this stage; the chips don’t take long to cook.

7.  Agitate the basket a little in your fryer, or if you’re using a pot, move the chips around carefully with a pair of tongs.

8.  After around five minutes, or when the turn golden brown this means they’re done.  Remove the basket from the deep fryer to drain excess oil off.  If you’re using a pot, transfer the chips onto paper towel.  You will need to do this quickly because the potato chips will continue to cook in the oil.

10.  After the potato chips have drained for a moment, transfer them to a serving plate and sprinkle them with a little table or sea salt.

Homemade potato chips are easy to prepare and taste great.  Anyone in your household at the time of cooking them will eat them up quickly so be prepared to man the deep fryer for longer than you expected.

Note:  Potato chips are best made in small batches.  This ensures even cooking as opposed to some cooking and some not cooking which is what will happen if you overfill your fryer.
