Your personal relationship with God

There are many different types of relationships in our lives.  Each one is complicated and different than the other. Out of these, our relationship with God is the most important.

One’s relationship with God is more than just being saved. It is more than being a member of a Church. It is not just belonging to a certain denomination or even calling your self a Christian. It is a relationship.

Most of the time, many of us start out at a young age or as a teenager answering the call to be saved. We either get saved out of fear or out of a desire to please our parents. In my case I had a fear of dying. My Mother was a strict Christian and I had done a few things that I considered sinful. For me, that meant that I was afraid to go to sleep at night, afraid I would die in my sins.

My intentions were to go up when my Church had another alter call. An alter call is when at the end of the service, the Pastor will ask if anyone would like to come up to the alter to give their life to God. One would pray and ask God's forgiveness of all their sins and vow not to sin again. I was anxious to get back to Church in order to turn my life around. I had no idea what was waiting for me at the Alter. I was sitting there waiting for the sermon to be over. When we all stood and the Church was singing, giving the alter call, I suddenly felt like someone was actually gently grasping my arm and my heart. I felt like I could hardly breathe. I knew that this was the Holy Spirit I had heard about. I had heard that the Holy Spirit would speak to you, tug at your heart, draw you by the Spirit, I do not know exactly how to explain what I felt but I know it was God. Tears fell down my face and I felt such peace after I knelt at the Alter. That night I gave my life to God, not just out of fear of death, but because I wanted to get to know this God I had been taught so much about.

Turning your life over to God is the first step to having a relationship with God. This is the beginning. Setting aside a time every day to read some of the Bible is important. It doesn’t matter how much you read or what time of the day. It is just important to get the word of God into our hearts, just as it says in the Bible. Everything that is in the Bible is for our own good. If you will notice when you break one of God's laws, or sin, there is always some kind of consequences. Whether we suffer for that sin while on earth or have to stand before God in Heaven, there are consequences.
