Best horror movies of all time

by Mark Feldt

Created on: October 21, 2010

Horror films have frightened us for many years. Movie goers have a fondness for being frightened at the theatre and look forward to a film that will make them jump in their seat. Most directors have failed to scare us with their disappointing offerings, but a few have succeeded in creating top notch horror movies. Here are a few fright films that stand above the rest.

Exorcist (1973)

The ultimate movie about demon possession, The Exorcist has spawned numerous second rate imitations. This tale about a little girl who becomes possessed made a household name of Linda Blair and became one of the most financially successful movies of all time. Warner Bros. proved that a big budget horror movie can be a success if you use top notch acting and direction.

Psycho (1960)

Alfred Hitchcock made a name for himself with horror and suspense movies and Psycho ranks right up there with the best of them. The movie comes across as a little dated now, but it broke new ground as being one of the first movies about a psycho killer. The fact that Janet Leigh was killed early in the film kept movie goers off balance.

Amityville Horror (1979)

Loosely based on a true story, The Amityville Horror became the ultimate haunted house movie. James Brolin’s descent into madness is a great psychological study and some of the dialogue has become timeless catch phrases. The front of the house is one of the most recognizable structures in movie history.

The Omen (1976)

Gregory Peck and Lee Remick headline this tale of the son of Satan reincarnated as their adopted child. The movie is filled with first rate acting and memorable scenes that will keep you glued to the screen.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

This macabre tale of 5 people who are attacked by a family of cannibals became one of the most profitable movies of all time. Made on a budget of less than $200,000, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has made close to $100,000,000 over its lifetime and became an icon for drive-in horror movies. Only one person was actually killed by a chainsaw in the movie and there was very little gore in the entire movie. It just goes to show you what the power of suggestion and a great title can do.

Dawn Of The Dead (1978)

Dawn Of The Dead is still considered one of the best zombie movies by horror fans. The entertaining mall backdrop and the addition of comic relief add to the enjoyment of this gory romp. After 30 years, it is still one of the goriest movies ever made.

Halloween (1978)
