No Man Builds My Island
Ok, ladies, let's get right down to business. You recently purchased a home, on your own, and want to do some renovations (your family is holding it's collective breath on this one). What to do?
Most of us, believe it or not (men), do know how to hold a hammer. Some of us even know how to use it (gasp!). This article is for women who haven't the slightest idea how to go about even learning HOW to do these things, let alone embark on the joys of home renovation with a light heart and a full set of screwdrivers.
I have two words for all of you: HOME DEPOT.
Now, hear me out. I am not talking about the "MAN STORE". I am talking about the FREE do-it-yourself clinics that run in virtually every store, in every town, in every country, on pretty well every weekend (did I mention they are FREE?). The clinics run the gamut of home repair from tiling floors and walls to planting perrennial gardens (FYI - they even have Do-It-HERself workshops for those of you {us} who would prefer not to here the men snicker when we ask what a plumb line is).
The in-store clincs run on the weekends, and the scehdules can be found on their website for whichever store is in your area. Note to Moms: they have Kids workshops that run at the same time! Take the kids!
They also offer online videos (also FREE) that come complete with a searchable archive, so you just about find whatever project you are looking for. AS well as the online, half-hour videos, they have a directory of projects that include step-by-step instructions for everything from replacing the hardware on your existing cabinets to plumbing to weatherproofing the outside of your home.
Come on, girls, let's take the power back! Invade your local Home Depot, and let no man build YOUR island!
