For a number of years, I had the good fortune of working for a major window tint manufacturer in St. Petersburg, FL. I also had the opportunity to learn first hand all aspects of window film – including the major benefits of installing it in your home.
Before exploring the benefits of window tint, it’s best to know some basics about the product:
Not All Window Tint is Created Equal
There all types and grades of window tint (also known as window film). The most popular types of window tints are made for cars, homes and buildings for privacy, reflective and/or safety purposes.
Car film is usually gray, blue or black in darker color variations – this type of tint is generally not suitable for installation in a home or office. Residential and commercial window film comes in a wide variety of colors or neutral tones – this type of tint usually has some type of reflective quality to it. Safety film can be clear or tinted and comes in various thickness or impact strengths – this type of film is actually sold to protect from window breakage related to severe weather or criminal intrusion – but it can also have reflective properties added to the mix.
There are also many different grades of window film. DIY (Do It Yourself) window tints are generally the least expensive and can be purchased in a local home improvement stores – although this type of tint is usually a low grade product and shows more irregularity in color and reflective style. Better quality window film can be purchased from local window tint distributors and can also be installed by the average homeowner or professional installer with basic, low-cost tools, simple instructions and a good bit of patience. Better grades of window film are a little more expensive, but worth the investment – good quality tint can last 10-20 years or more and save the homeowners a bundle of money in that time. Specifically, tint with a solar bronze quality has always been the most popular with professional installers and interior decorators because the tint is more natural in color palette and offers the best reflective qualities.
