When it comes to a philosophical question such as the debate topic, you first have to approach the matter with a logical mind, no matter how absurd it might sound. Whether angels are real or imaginary can't , with 100% certainty, be answered by any living person. What we can base our answers on, though, is the evidence. And when it comes to evidence, there is absolutely none on the table proving or even supporting the existence of angels. Delusions? Yes. Mental disorders? Yes. Intellectually dishonest people? Yes. Would I love it if angels did exist? Of course. But I'm not going to delude myself into believing they exist just because my heart desires they do.
When it comes to this debate, people who do believe these beings exist say things such as "I have felt their presence", or that they "have seen them". These reasons are obviously unscientific and fallacious. Electromagnetic fields have a direct effect on the brain. In some instances, they can cause hallucinations. Some of these hallucinations give people the sense that they're feeling and even seeing a divine presence. As a matter of fact, Neuroscientist Michael Persinger invented a device called "The God Helmet" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nN3ggRgY7Ac). This helmet, by stimulating the brain with magnetic fields, can induce angels, demons, ghosts, aliens, god, near-death experience, unexplainable environments and indescribable beings. This alone explains away just about every angelic or divine experience. The same way virtually all phenomena has been explained away by science.
Another problem I have with angels floating around and guarding people is the fact that so many people actually aren't guarded at all. Those of us privileged to live in developed nations like America? Sure, maybe at times is seems as though there is some sort of guardian or divine being guiding us through our daily lives. But what about the 1.4 billion people who don't have access to clean water? Do these people have angels hovering above them? The children of Ireland and all around the world who were raped and bullied by the thousands by catholic priests, shouldn't they, of all people, had intervention from a Biblical angel? Or perhaps the women in theocratic Muslim middle eastern nations. Women who have to live life with a burka covering their entire body. Women who can be killed by their husbands. Women who, by law, are inferior to men. Women who, if raped, can be murdered by their fathers for being "unclean". Do these women have angels hovering around them?
The universe is 156 billion light years across. That is 156 billion times 6 trillion miles. Do you think that god, even if he (it) is real, realizes earth is even here, let alone sends his (its) angels to float around Earths atmosphere and save people from making poor decisions? It's extremely arrogant to even suggest such an idea. We are literally less than a fleck of dust on a larger cosmic scale. The idea that some floating sky wizard sends his flying cloud fairies to earth in order to protect people is just absurd on every imaginable level possible.
So, based on lack of evidence, science, and the sheer absurdity of the idea, no, I do not believe that angels are real. Logic, contradictory evidence, and lack of physical evidence suggest that, yes, angels are indeed imaginary.
