Movie reviews: Twilight

The Twilight movie, based on the first novel of the Twilight Saga written by Stephenie Meyer in 2005 was released in 2008. As the novel, the movie was a huge success and it still maintains a high level of popularity today.

Vampires became famous through Bram Stoker's Dracula. Since the novel, the theme of the undead inspired many writers and producers. People who are familiar with the subject will remember Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula in 1992 among others.

Twilight is another vision of the vampires. Originally aimed to teenagers and young adults, the subject attracted grown ups as well.

The movie relates a teenage story. It refers to a romance between a human and a vampire. This first episode of the saga is a bit naive but at some point the viewer forgets about its simplicity.

Stephenie Meyer brings the vampire myth to a new dimension. Forget about the day sleep, revulsion from crosses and silver, death from a wooden stake through the heart, fear of the sun, these are just fantasies and legends. In Meyer's world, vampires never sleep and to kill them, you have to dismember and burn them. Their skin glows in the sun like diamonds but as in any other story of the genre they are deadly attractive, dangerously quick, strong, careless and in deep need of blood to survive.

The author introduces us to the Cullen family. A coven of vampire, but they are different. They call themselves “vegetarians”, and they only drink animal blood. They are all ravishing and intelligent. They try to keep a low profile to be able to live among humans without being noticed for as long as they can. Like humans, they want to live a rather “normal” life. They seem to have achieved that in the small town of Forks, Washington.

The main theme of the movie is the love story between Edward and Bella.

Edward Cullen became a vampire at the age of 17 almost a hundred years ago. He was dying of Spanish Influenza when Carlisle Cullen turned him into a vampire. Edward is unbelievably attractive and wise, and he has a gift, he can read minds. He is also single and lonely.

Bella Swan came to Forks to live with her father, the Chief of Police. She is described as being clumsy and stubborn. She hates Forks but while adjusting to her new life she will find a particular interest in the Cullen family. Their mysteriousness intrigues her and will attract her to Edward. After saving her from a car accident, Edward is forced to admit his condition as a vampire.
