Your first Capoeira class do's and don'ts

Created on: October 14, 2010

Capoeira is a Brazilian Martial Art performed in a circle or roda. Capoeira was demonstrated in the movie "Only the Strong". Capoeira combines gymnastics and dance steps with martial arts. You will need to possess balance and be able to perform cartwheels, handstands, flips, spins, and break dance steps to learn Capoeira. While strings or drums help to reinforce the rhythm of Capoeira, the Martial Art does not need to be performed to music. There is no age limit but agility is an asset. While being physically fit will make the class more enjoyable, don't wait to start classes. If you wait until you think you are fit enough, you will never start.

First Class Dos:

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to perform kicks and to move freely. Some students prefer shorts while others prefer loose fitting pants such as sweats.

Be willing to do a cartwheel, handstand, and headstand.

Be able to comfortably perform repetitive dance steps such as the "ginga".

Be prepared to remove your shoes and socks and to participate in class barefooted.

Always stretch and do warm up and cool down exercises.

Drink plenty of water before class. Vigorous exercise needs the body to be hydrated.

Ensure enough personal space around you for you and others to complete gymnastics moves.

First Class Don'ts:

Capoeira is not for the person susceptible to motion sickness.

Capoeira is not for the person unable to stand on one leg.

Do not wear clothing with other martial art logos out of respect for the Mestre or instructor.

Do not expect to incorporate hand blocks or boxing moves. Capoeira is a non-contact martial art.

Do not stand too close to other classmates. Allow everyone room to move around.

Remember that no one likes a show off or clown especially at the first class.

Do not take lessons from an instructor who does not provide mats to protect against injury.

Do not allow yourself to become dehydrated after class.

Do not expect to become an expert after only a few lessons. As with any martial art, discipline and practice are required.

Martial Arts of any kind can be a fun family physical fitness program. Physical fitness along with a healthy diet may also provide an additional benefit of weight loss. Training in a single Martial Art may not provide protection against a street thug high on drugs. A self defense class should be taken in addition to the martial arts discipline.
