Being tired occasionally is normal, especially if you lead a hectic life. But being exhausted to the point where you don’t enjoy your life isn’t normal. No matter how busy you are with work, kids, housework, friends, or whatever fills your time, you should still have enough energy to lead a fulfilling life. If not, you may have a problem.
If you find yourself feeling more tired than usual, first you may want to visit your doctor and have a blood test to make sure everything is in order. Otherwise, consider these natural ways to battle fatigue and increase your energy.
•Limit sugar and caffeine.
Simple sugars may provide a much-needed jolt when you feel tired, but your blood sugar can then quickly plummet below its normal level. Caffeine can also create highs and lows.
If you are craving sugar, try a sweet, delicious apple, banana or other fruit. The complex sugars will help level out your blood sugar and you will still get a nice boost of energy, plus a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals.
Substitute heavily caffeinated coffees and sodas with an invigorating drink like yerba mate tea or pure water with a lemon slice or a splash of pomegranate juice.
•Eat more protein.
Carbohydrates are tasty, but your body also needs high quality protein. Eat a variety of meat, eggs, fish, tempeh, legumes, nuts and dairy to get adequate protein to help sustain your energy for the day.
•Drink sufficient water.
Dehydration is an energy killer. Drinking pure, filtered water is the best way to hydrate you body and increase your energy level.
•Get physical and mental exercise.
When you are tired, the last thing you want to do is exercise, but increasing your heart rate could be the energizer you need. Lying on the couch and watching TV can actually make you even more tired. Try walking, yoga or biking. It can be fun, as well as energizing.
•Do crosswords or play games for mental stimulation.
•Practice deep breathing.
Deep breaths bring oxygen to your vital organs, blood and cells. Oxygenated blood is healthier and more energized blood.
Yoga is a great vehicle for learning how to breathe, but just sitting quietly and filling your lungs with fresh air can be done just about anytime or anywhere. When you find yourself in a stressful, exhausting situation, a few deep breaths can make you feel a whole lot better.
•Get enough sleep.
It may be easier said than done, but sleep is a real energizer. If you can’t get at least six hours a night of really good sleep, a quick nap might help. Instead of watching TV or browsing the Internet for hours at night, try going to bed early. Just a half-hour might make the difference.
•Take supplements.
Holistic, homeopathic, herbal, and vitamin/mineral supplements, such as B12, can help safely energize your body and mind. Find them at your local health food store or on sites like www.iherb.com.
•Avoid bad news.
Negativity is all around us these days. And it can quickly zap our energy. Try to limit watching, listening or reading bad news in the media, or associating with gossips and others who bring you down. Instead use your time to do something fun. Listen to energizing or relaxing music. Laugh with friends and family. Watch a favorite comedy. Life is good.
Being exhausted doesn’t have to be a way of life. A few lifestyle changes can help you gain the energy you need to live the life you want.
