"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" (Historian, 1999). This famous sentence, not an official motto although thought by many to be the motto of the United States Postal Service, is an inscription found on the building of a New York City post office. The Federal government has been serving communication needs of Americans since the late 18th century when Benjamin Franklin was appointed the first continental postmaster by Congress. The effectiveness of communicating through paper mail has progressed throughout the last two centuries from the Pony Express to the introduction of airmail and continuing on to the United States Postal Service beginning operations in 1971.
