Mystery for kids' online magazine

Tying his left sneaker as Tim Jones came over to taunt him, Danny Cullen peered above the top edge of his glasses and grinned. Tim Jones—the son of the town's mayor and the only kid to receive detention twenty times in a thirty day marking period -was a bully, but Danny did not let Tim get the best of him.

Danny walked toward the exit of the school building where his mother was waiting in her new, shiny red Toyota.

            She honked.

            "Danny, let's go," she yelled.

Danny was immersed in the tall weeds on the side of the schoolyard that the janitor failed to mow.

"Danny! Come on!" she called and then she honked again.

"Mom," Danny said with his pointer finger up in the air. "I think I found something."

Danny's mom rolled her eyes. Danny ran from the field of disorderly brush to the confines of the vehicle and its new car aroma.

"Get that out of here, Danny!" his mother yelled as she saw that he was carrying an object with some dirt on it, but it was dry to the touch.

"Mom, you know I will be careful."

Danny slowly placed the object into a plastic bag. His mom shook her head slightly but let him take the object home.  She thought to herself, at least it is not muddy. It did rain three days previously and the ground was damp. When Danny got home, he realized that the object was something very precious. Danny looked on his computer and found a picture of the object, and then walked toward the living room.

"Mom, you won't believe this but I have an artifact that was taken from a museum last week."

            "You're right, Danny. I won't believe it."
