Some of you probably still remember the excitement and thrills of communication before the internet and social networks appeared.
Living far away from a loved one used to be challenging. Writing long letters, stamping the envelope and going to the post office to send the several pages of personal accounts. What came next was frantic expectation for a reply, which usually arrived weeks later.
The century of Facebook, MySpace and Twitter has changed all that. Though mail writing used to be romantic and much more personal than virtual communication, it lacked one important aspect – immediacy. By the time a person managed to read the news, events had unfolded even more, making the letter lose all of its newsworthiness.
Social networks revolutionized the world of communications. Their impact is already evident and vastly recognized. What are the long term implications of social networking? Can we claim that the trends already established will continue evolving? Is it possible for social networks to impact society much more than we are realizing today?
COMMUNICATION IMPLICATIONS
Immediacy of communication is already well-established. Social networks connect people regardless of location and physical obstacles. Communication has become viable right here, right now. All it takes is a computer and a personal account in the respective social network.
The social networking impact on communication is immense. Social networking has spoiled consumers in a manner that any other form of indirect communication that lacks the same level of immediacy or detail is seen as dissatisfactory.
People have become increasingly dependent on social network communication. They find friends online, discover old friends in these websites, do business there and even fall in love on Facebook.
The long term implications in the communication sector are immense. Social networks will keep on evolving having one main aim in mind – to provide new options to their picky consumers who are already growing tired with traditional interaction means.
We can only guess about the new developments that will follow in the footsteps of existing interaction options. One thing is certain – social networks have left a deep mark on the communications sector.
