BlackBerry app reviews: Clock

A fundamental feature of any mobile phone is the clock and alarm feature. Some phones pull this off well and the BlackBerry Clock application is no exception.

At first, it seems like a very simple little application - perhaps even too simple. However, once you've had a dig around, you find that there is a lot more to the BlackBerry Clock application than at first meets the eye.

The BlackBerry Clock application has three different modes: the clock and alarm system, a timer and a stopwatch. Each of these clocks have different faces to choose from and their own set of options.

When you first load the BlackBerry Clock application, you will be shown the normal clock, along with your alarm, if you have already set one up. If you wish to switch to the timer or the stopwatch, you will need to press the BlackBerry Menu button and make your selection.

The BlackBerry Clock application can only hold one alarm at a time and you have three choices of alarm; none, weekdays only or every day. Although this is useful for those who use their BlackBerry as an alarm clock and have to wake up every day or weekday at a set time, the alarm clock feature of the BlackBerry Clock application might be a bit weak for other users. However, it does make up for the lack of alarm functionality by being very easy to set a new alarm time.

To access the options, first you need to go into the BlackBerry Clock application and then press the BlackBerry Menu button and select "Options". From here you can change all sorts of features, such as:

CLOCK:
Clock Face: You can choose to have Analog, which is like a normal watch face; Digital, which is plainly written numbers which are very easy to read; Flip Clock, which looks like a digital clock but where the numbers "flip" when they change; and lastly, LCD Digital, which is like the Digital face but with more "squared" looking numbers. The LCD Digital face is the default face and is the easiest to read in the middle of the night.

Home Time Zone: You should keep this set to whatever time zone you're in.
When Charging: This is where you decide what your BlackBerry does once you've plugged your BlackBerry to its charger. You can either set it to do absolutely nothing, show just the clock or enter bedside mode (which turns off the radio, dims the screen and prevents the LED light from flashing when you get an email or SMS).

You can also change the time and date from this menu by scrolling until you have the "Set Time" button selected and clicking on it.
