Kittens can be cute and fun to play with but are also intrepid explorers and love nothing more than to find their way into the smallest and most dangerous of places. When you first get a kitten, you will need to keep a very close eye on it before it finds itself up to no good and possibly in a dangerous situation.
The best time for you to get a kitten would be when you’re planning on being home with it for a couple of days, as you will want to bond with your new kitten and also make sure it’s safe and comfortable in its new home.
Before you get your kitten, you will need to get some supplies; a food bowl, drinking bowl, litter tray and kitty litter, a bed, some toys for it to play with and a scratching post. Try and keep the food consistent for your new kitten, to prevent it from getting an upset tummy. You can do this by simply asking the breeder or previous owner what they have been feeding your kitten before you owned it.
Food and Water bowls:
There are a great many choices for food / water bowls. You can get large bowls or small ones, you can get double-sided bowls (one side for food, the other for water), you can get plastic, metal or ceramic bowls. The choice is ultimately up to you and the kitten probably won’t have a preference.
Litter tray:
You can get litter trays that are covered or uncovered and they will be of different depths. If your kitten is very young (under 12 weeks), you might want to consider getting your kitten a shallow litter tray, as it may have problems climbing into its tray to go toilet; you can always get it a bigger tray later on.
If your kitten refuses to do its business in the tray and you have an uncovered one, you might want to consider getting a covered tray; many kittens (and cats) prefer to have some privacy when they do their business, although this doesn’t apply to all kittens.
If possible, do not move the kitten’s tray around the house and place it where your kitten can have some privacy, i.e. - not in the busiest room of your home.
Litter:
There are some different types of litter available; you can choose from woodchips (either small or large), the clay-like chips of litter or the crystal-like chips. The clay-like chips are the most commonly used and contain anti-bacterial agents, which are supposed to help reduce the smell.
Woodchips are the cheapest option and prevent smells much better than the clay-like chips but when the woodchips have become moist, they turn into a powder-like substance,
