The question asked supposes there would remain an “us” if God left – which is not the case. If God left us, there would be no us, for we live and breathe and are because we are a part of who He is; it’s that simple. We are made in His image, a part of who He is; would He deny Himself?
Being brought up in man’s doctrine of religion, beginning in the RC church; years ago I would have and did tremble at the thought. It was indelibly imprinted in my mind that if I didn’t do “x, y or z” then God would indeed have nothing to do with me, such a wretch was I. The thing we call religion has become our greatest stumbling block in living life for the purposes for which we were all created.
As long as you are living and breathing, you can bet your bottom dollar that God is with you. He is the very breath you breathe, whether or not you choose to recognize this simple fact. Personally speaking, it was when I came to that realization, that I was able to “bag up my fears,” and drown them in the biggest pool of water I could find, nowhere to be seen, never to be retrieved.
We think He has left us in those dark days, lonely nights; at those times when the things of the world seem to be crushing you to a pulp. But, it’s like that infamous poem called “Footsteps.” It is at those times that He really is more present than ever, though you realize it not.
Our minds, our thoughts and our egos are made up of so very many things that we've fed them over the years. They are conditioned by religion and another weak and fallible man’s idea of what he or she thinks God says, does or wants.
We are individually and specially unique; each and every one of us. We would not be if God did not desire it to be so. The God, whom I know, this moment, does not do anything without purpose. Especially so, would He not create a human being without purpose. He creates out of love and we are love and are loved. We all have a purpose and until the time arrives when that purpose has been fulfilled, you can (sorry for repeating this cliché) bet your bottom dollar He will never leave you, nor, as the Scripture promises, “forsake you.”
Josh 1:5 No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.
He may turn away, turn aside and look the other way, when we've tested Him to the hilt; when we've so angered him with our rebellion, rather than “smiting” us, He looks the other way; for had He continued to look upon us, well I shudder to think what could happen.
Deut. 31:17 On that day I will become angry with them and forsake them; I will hide my face from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters and difficulties will come upon them, and on that day they will ask, 'Have not these disasters come upon us because our God is not with us?'
Perhaps it is the other way around, and we should be asking ourselves, “Have I left God; forsaken Him?” because I’m so busy running and ruling my own life.
Joshua 24:16 Then the people answered, "Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods!
