Flash fiction: Trick or treat

by Sadie Grey

Created on: October 10, 2010

“Trick or Treat?” Ted Mosley asked his daughter Kim.

“Trick Daddy!” She giggled in anticipation.

Ted grabbed her around the waist and began tickling her. Kim howled with glee. Giggling and squirming in her father’s arms, she lost her witch hat. “My hat Daddy!”

Ted let her go. Kim picked her hat up from the floor and looked at him. “How many houses can I go to Daddy?”

“You already know that answer.” He smiled. “Just a few. We don’t know everyone here yet. Besides, your cousins are coming over later for the party.” He picked his keys up from the coffee table. “Ready?”

“Ready, oh, my bag!”

Outside, two women stood in front of the Mosley house talking and waiting for their children who were across the street.

“Who found the bodies?” Sue asked.

“The family did. He was lying on top of the little girl as if to protect her. She was holding her trick-or-treat bag. The family arrived for the party and found them lying on the floor.” Mary shook her head. “Such a tragedy. They lived in the house for such a short time.”

“And no one has lived in the house since?”

“No one has even looked at it as far as I know.” Mary leaned into Sue. “Do you see a light on in there?”

Sue lowered her flashlight and gasped a little. “There is a light on-wait, it went off!”

Mary grabbed her friend’s arm. “Look! The door is opening!” She whispered loudly.

“Heaven above!” Sue whispered and watched as the door opened then closed.

Mary pushed Sue. “Move!”

The two women peered through the tall juniper hedge. The house was dark and as far as they could tell, no one came out of the house.

Ted frowned as he watched fog move toward the house. Fear seemed to move with it. He felt Kim push against his leg. She whimpered a little. He turned her around and they moved back into the house. “Not this year Baby.”  He said quietly.
