Flash fiction: An autumn romance

by Sadie Grey

Created on: October 09, 2010

The trees were showing off their autumn dress this morning. Leaves danced wildly in the wind and with the sun shining brilliantly, the trees took on a watercolor look. The sight took Manda’s breath away. She looked at Greg who seemed father away than usual.

“I need to tell you something Manda.” He said quietly.

“Here it comes.” Manda thought to herself. She turned to him. “I’m listening.”

“I got engaged four years ago. Sara and I were on our way to her parent’s house to tell them. A car ran a red light and hit us broad side; Sara’s side of the car. The car hit us so hard; we were pushed into another car.”

“Greg.” Manda whispered.

“Three people died that day. Sara, the woman who ran the light and the driver we hit. I was in the hospital for a month. In the beginning, they blamed me. But the cameras they had on that street corners proved me innocent. Because Sara and I had, had a drink before getting into the car, her parents blamed me. They do to this day.”

“But one drink wouldn’t have-”

Greg turned to her, taking her hand. “I know, the cops understood; the family of the third driver understood, but Sara’s parents lost their only child. I’m telling you because I want you to understand why I don’t drink when I go out. Why I don’t like it when you drink when we go out-” He began to sob.

Manda embraced him fiercely. “It’s okay, I get it! I understand! I love you Greg.”

He pulled away, looking at her. “It was a perfect spring day when it happened.” He spread his arms wide. “This is a perfect autumn day. I want to ask you to marry me, take you home to your parents and-”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Yes, I’ll marry you! Nothing will happen today.” She took him in her arms again. “Nothing, I promise you. I love you so much!”

In her arms, Greg finally let the past slip away. He felt it physically. He opened his eyes and saw just how beautiful the day was.
