Drama: The colors of Autumn

by Sadie Grey

Created on: October 09, 2010

Characters: Vic Raymond (Photographer). Elliott McCall (Fourteen years old)

Scene: Hill top overlooking Collinsburg. The colors of autumn are in full bloom looking down from this hill. Vic appears from stage left, camera hung around his neck and a backpack slung. He stops just before moving further onto the stage. There is one tree in full autumnal bloom with several bushes also in bloom. Vic is not alone on this hill.

Vic: Whoa! (Pulling the camera to his eye and taking a few pictures) Beautiful!

(He moves to center stage, camera in hand, looking right stage and down)

Vic: Spectacular! (Taking more photos) He turns facing back center stage and stops at seeing a young boy of about thirteen sitting on the ground, leaning against a large boulder) Oh, sorry, I thought I was the only one up here.

Elliott: No problem. It’s public property.

Vic: I thought no one had ever been up here after pushing my way through the over growth.

Elliott: You came up on the east side of the hill. I came up on the west side.

Vic: So, this is your hill?

Elliott: I call it mine-well-me and my brothers know where it is and how to get here.

Vic: I can leave dude.

Elliott: No, its okay, I mean, you’re here to take pictures, right? (Pointing at the camera)

Vic: Yeah. But I’m not here to get in your space.

Elliott: I’m just thinking. You’re okay.

Vic: It is beautiful up here. (Extends his hand) My name is Vic.

Elliott: (Shaking hands) Elliott.

Vic: Mind if I share the dirt with you Elliott?

Elliott: Have a seat. Like I said, I’m just thinking.

Vic: (Pulling his backpack off and sitting away from Elliott) I take photos to sell. Stock photos. I put them on the web and hopefully someone buys them.

Elliott: Do you make a lot of money like that?

Vic: Sometimes. From now until the snow falls for sure. But, the colors of autumn always do well. I’ll make enough for rent until the end of the year and then some. Some people know my work, so I do pretty well. (He looks at Elliott speaking quietly) What’s up Elliott?

Elliott: (Sitting back against the rock) My dad passed away three years ago last month. I come up here and think about him every year. (He jerked a thumb behind him) There’s a stream back that way Dad used to take me and my brothers to fish in October.

Vic: I’m sorry about your old man Elliott; he had to be very young; you’re what; thirteen?

Elliott: Fourteen and yeah, he was young. He died in a car crash. We would come up
