great costume idea which has nothing really complex to it. The era when the story took place was a different time so of course people did not dress as you normally do today. There are lots of online costumes for sale from many sources if you want to just buy one too. Otherwise just look around your local fabric store for a pattern for a red cape.

Basic elements

The cape is red and must have a hood. It can be short or long depending on your preference. If you had a cape which was a light color and wanted to dye it red that would not be too difficult or very expensive. It might be worth your time to check for a cape in thrift stores. It would not be as expensive there or online either. Then buy a pack of dye and change it to a red one for a few dollars and very little time. A skirt and blouse or a dress would be the next thing to get your hands on. Most of the popular costumes seem to be a fairly full skirt in red or blue patterns. Whatever you think looks good with the red cape would be a fine choice. Often this costume includes an apron. In the era this story was written little girls and women wore aprons to cover their clothing most of the time. Any dressy looking little girl shoes would be fine with this outfit. If you are concerned about looking the part you might not want to use tennis shoes but good griping shoes are the main need for any child who will be out and about wearing this outfit. Then last of all the basket that little red carried to her grandmother's home. You could slip in some goodies or you could choose to leave this basket empty so that the child could use it to put the treats into as she calls on neighbors and friends on Halloween.

The story

You probably know the story of Little Red Riding Hood who was sent by her mother to go call on Grandmother who was very sick. And she was told which path to take and which path to avoid. This was because there was a big bad wolf in the woods who was so dangerous so she was warned not to stop to talk to anyone and not to stop to pick flowers or wander off the path.
