UPS is a world leader in delivery service as the company is currently the world's largest package service. The company has been in existence for over 100 years and continues to thrive. During the holiday seasons the company often sees a surge in demand for deliveries and as a result has announced they plan to add additional UPS jobs.
The company recently announced they will be adding a total of 50,000 additional jobs to help with delivery demands for the 2010 holiday season. This increase in jobs is the same number of employees UPS added for 2009.
This is good news for those currently out of work and looking to find a job in an era where unemployment has been at a higher than usual rate. Hiring for the 2010 holiday season is expected to begin during the month of October. Bloomberg reports UPS spokesperson Recbecca Treacy-Lenda says adding these jobs will boost the current U.S. staff of 340,000 full and part time workers.
These additional seasonal jobs typically are related to sorting packages and assisting drivers. The jobs pay about $8.50 an hour to start. Other positive news is historically those workers who get their foot in the proverbial door during the temporary hiring season may ultimately land themselves a full time position. UPS is well known for their good benefits and salaries.
UPS was founded in 1907 when James E. Casey started the "American Messenger Company" based in Seattle, WA. After a couple of name changes the company ultimately became known as "United Parcel Service" in 1919 which has evolved into the current day UPS. Innovation is an integral part of UPS and over the last century UPS has really redefined the concept of package delivery and has literally gotten the system down to a science through their heavy use of technology.
Over the years UPS has also demonstrated strength through their opportunities for careers. In 2009 UPS was listed as one of the "World's Most Reputable Companies" by Forbes Magazine, in 2008 was listed as "One of the Best Places to Work" by the Human Rights Campaign, and in the past was named one of the "50 best places to Launch a Career" by Business Week. Fortune has also cited UPS as one of "America's Top 10 Most Socially Responsible Companies (UPS.com).
