Memoirs: Online dating success stories

by Mandy Sheeks

I'd always be a bit skeptical about the whole online dating scene, but as fate would have it I connected well with a man that happened to be chatting in an online room. I have to admit sadly that it was merely shallowness that initally drew me into the conversation, he was strikingly handsome, with a head of sandy blonde hair that was a little messed with boyish charm, sad blue eyes and a crocidile smile... he reminded me of someone, but who I wasn't sure. He had a certain energy and charisma that really made him the whole package for me and he showered me with compliments and joked that I must be on some kind of a bet to be talking to the likes of him.

After only a couple of weeks we decided that we should definatly meet... of course there was a problem with this... he was in one country and me here in the states, we decided that we'd meet in NYC and stay a few days for our first date. Though it was a very short time away the days leading up seemed to drag on forever and I became more and more self concious about the big event, but soon enough the day had come and I packed up my suit cases and jumped on a plane. The streets of New York were busy and dirty and I was completely uncultured to the surroundings that I was dropped into, comming from a small town I was mesmerized and taken completely by the city. I was dropped in front of my swaky hotel which was lit up with neon lights in a bright blue at 9am. I checked my bags and sat down with a cappuchino in the hotel restraunt. He was to meet me at 10 and by 9:15 I decided I needed a walk to try to curb my nervous anticiapation. After my forth time around I ducked back into the hotel, my heels clicking on the linolium, pulling my wool jacket around me... I thought I saw him come up behind me from the corner of my eye and just as I was about to turn to do a double take he had grabbed my hand turned me around and layed a gentle kiss on my lips.

With a little embarrassment I looked down then back up and smiled at him. He wasn't a lot taller than me and he had a soft voice with a faint accent that sent a little chill down my spine. I could almost feel my eyes glazing over as I looked at him and he seemed well impressed by me just the same. We couldn't stop smiling as we made our way down the city streets... our first stop was Starbucks where we had for a latte something or other, we sat and chatted and laughed and I felt a connection that I'd never had with anyone out on a first date or ever really for that matter. We spent the weekend completely attached at the hip, it was all new to have so much trust and communication with someone who could really be deemed as nothing more than a stranger, I suppose the strangest part was that we were like old souls.

The days drew to an end much quicker than I ever expected they would... day 4 lead us to JFK for a somber goodbye and talk of another visit... soon.. very soon. Circumstances of life are ever changing, and it amazes me that I've met this man who may very well be my soul mate in a place that doesn't really exist at all. It's definatly beautiful that in another time, liklyness of our encountering each other may have never happened. Technology is a wonderful thing.
