How to play as the Zerg successfully in Starcraft: Brood War

Created on: October 07, 2010

The Zerg are the masters of the early rush, the ambush, and cost effectiveness. Where Terrans rely on a more defensive strategy and Protoss on surviving the early game to punish their opponents later on, Zerg players tend to excel with a more aggressive play style. Their units are highly mobile, allowing them to harass the enemy earlier and more often, making it difficult for the opponent to expand as they are forced to build stronger defenses in order to stop the onslaught of your forces.

The early game is extremely important in SCBW, and even though rushing is a tried-and-true tactic, it has the serious downside of putting all your eggs in one basket- if you're attack is successful, the opponent's rescources will be crippled for the loss of their gatherers and even more due to the fact they must rebuild. Unless you are a total failure, your foe will quickly succumb to a secondary strike. On the other hand, if your units are destroyed, an experienced player will retaliate as soon as  you are found, because they will have more resources and therefore a tougher force than you. When they do, you will lose.

*DO* build a vespene geyser in the first minute or two and place a drone or two on it. Zerg supplements more of their units with vespene than the other races, the perk of this being that Zerg's units are less expensive. Of course, produce your spawning pool as early as you can, as well. if there is a nearby starting location use your initial overlord to scout it. The number of zerglings varies player to player and game to game based on how you feel- For your starting rush, it's best to make sure your attack consists of at least 4 zerglings, which are enough to destroy one defensive unit if your opponent wasn't quick enough on the draw or overestimated how long it would take you to attack them. It's not a good idea to dump too many resources into a huge zergling rush unless you are going all out. A rush should not contain more than 8 zerglings this early in the game, and that is 200 minerals, very exorbitant for such an early point in the game. You should attack with at least 2 zerglings because they make good scouts and can ruin an unprepared opponent's economy.

The best strategy is to scout out your enemy's position and then, if you are going to attack, to hinder your opponent by killing as many of their gatherers as you can. Weakening their economy will set them up for a more dangerous attack in a short time frame. If the units they've built for defense
