The Case of the False Rumor
When I heard the rumor about my best friend Lacey, I knew it couldn’t be true. There is no way that my best friend, who I have known for over six years, tried to pay a teacher ten dollars to get her “C” grade changed to an “A.”
First of all, Lacey never got C’s. She always got A’s in every subject, from math to English to science to history and even gym class.
Second of all, one of the character traits that Lacey is most known for is her honesty. She would never resort to bribery even if she did get a C instead of a B or an A.
Third of all, nobody seemed to know which teacher it was that Lacey supposedly offered the bribe. If it were true, there would have been more specific details about which teacher it was.
Last but not least, if Lacey had tried to bribe a teacher for a better grade, she would have been called to the principal’s office. If that had really happened, I would have known about it because Lacey tells me everything, and she always tells the truth.
As Lacey’s best friend, I decided that it was my duty to discover who had started this false rumor and why. I knew there were a lot of possible suspects.
There was Jenny Maynard, who was always teasing Lacey about her good grades, saying she was a “nerd.” She might have started the rumor out of jealousy because Jenny hardly ever gets good grades.
There was Mike Sanchez, who lost to Lacey in the spelling bee in Mr. Barton’s class last week, and might be out for revenge. After all, it was down to the final two contestants and Mike misspelled the word “spelling,” which made everybody laugh at him, including Lacey (and myself – I really couldn’t help it, it was just such a funny word to lose a spelling bee on).
Another possible suspect was Kelly Snow, who had been caught several times spreading rumors about other people (some of them true, some of them not). She was, without a doubt, the biggest gossip in s chool. But as far as I know, she had nothing against Lacey that would make her want to start a false rumor.
To begin my investigation, I started with the victim, Lacey. “Do you know who could have possibly started this rumor?” I asked her, with my pen and notebook poised.
“I have no idea!” Lacey angrily replied. “All I know is that it is a lie. I get straight A’s
